Accreditation for Pharmacists
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This activity provides 1 hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit (ACPE activity #204-000-09-442-H01P).
Methods and Format
This continuing education activity is available in two formats:
- Web-Based CE. An online activity consisting of audio and slides, a post-test, and an activity evaluation tool.
- Podcast. An audio-only version of the presentation that can be downloaded to your computer or portable MP3 player, slides (included in optional PDF handout), a post-test, and an activity evaluation tool.
Participants must view or listen to all presentations, take the activity post-test, and complete the course evaluation to receive continuing education credit. A minimum score of 70% is required on the test for credit to be awarded, and participants may print their official statements of continuing education credit immediately. The estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour. This activity is provided free of charge.
Target Audience
This continuing pharmacy education activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists in a variety of practice settings, including large and small health systems, outpatient clinics, managed-care organizations, long-term care facilities, academia, and supportive roles, and all pharmacists interested in antimicrobial stewardship and antimicrobial resistance.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this knowledge-based educational activity, participants should be able to
- Describe the impact of inappropriate antimicrobial use on antimicrobial resistance, morbidity, mortality, hospital length of stay, and healthcare costs.
- Explain the potential impact of multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship programs on the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms.
- Identify a potential challenge in implementing an antimicrobial stewardship program as well as the advantages of using a multidisciplinary approach in an institutional setting.
- Describe CMS reimbursement policies for two infectious disease-related hospital-acquired conditions (Ònever eventsÓ) that CMS considers preventable and the pharmacy practice implications of these policies.
- Discuss the role of the pharmacist in implementing interdisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship programs
